Posttraumatic stress disorder has been describer as a mental illness or disorder by the American Psychiatric Association. Gary Berg's book, East of Eden: The Spiritual Meaning of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, takes exception to this definition, which carries with it a pejorative meaning that too often characterizes combat veterans as misfits or losers. Gary's book argues that the wounds of war are spiritual injuries that carry with them an essential prophetic message we desperately need to hear. PTSD is not an illness but a protest against war and killing. Introducing the concept of quantum science and morality related to war and our role in a global society, East of Eden challenges us to think of a bright and entangled future of peace and harmony we all want. Joseph Campbell's definition of a hero is one who reluctantly answers a call, experiences and surmounts a life-changing crisis, and then brings the wisdom gained back to the community. It is the journey of many of our warriors who suffer from the spiritual and moral injuries of war. We need to listen to these heroes. Gary's book on the spiritual meaning of PTSD is available in both paperback and eBook format.
