This Spiritual Assessment Website is a resource for chaplains, hospitals, clinics, and churches interested in using religious faith and spirituality to maintain health, prevent disease, and treat illness. It seeks to further understand the relationship between religion, religious values and practrices, and healthcare outcomes. Its goal is to expand the dialogue between physicians, nurses, behavioral scientists, chaplains, pastoral couselors, and religious leaders to collaborate and gain greater understanding of physical, mental, and spiritual health, and their interdependence with one another. This website seeks to provide a spiritual assessment instrument that demonstrates the value spirituality and religious practices have for the health and well-being of the human communidty.
Our goal is to provide a resource for spiritual care that will reverse and prevent disease and promote healing using the fundamental healing principles of body, mind, and spirit. My book, East of Eden: The Spiritual Meaning of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, describes this process as it pertains to a significant number of people suffering from PTSD.
Two tools are offered for assessing spirituality and religion with a focus on spiritual and moral injury. Special attention is given to military veterans and the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder. A manual is available describing these two assessment instruments.
